EU gives May conditions for Brexit delay: The European Union tossed British Prime Minister Theresa May a lifeline on Wednesday, saying Britain would be allowed to push back its departure date from the EU, but only if the parliament in London endorsed May’s withdrawal plan. Lawmakers have twice already rejected the plan, but in the unlikely event they changed their minds, Britain would still need an extension. The president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, did offer a bit of encouragement in an otherwise bleak landscape. Tusk said he thought a short delay to Brexit would be possible, but it would be conditional on a positive vote on the withdrawal agreement in the House of Commons. He made clear what other EU leaders have long hinted: The EU is unwilling to give Britain more time unless the government can find a way out of the Brexit impasse. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that if the EU was to decide on extending the deadline for Britain, then it would like to know why. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said a delay could only be granted if May guaranteed that its purpose was to finalise the ratification of the deal already negotiated. Meanwhile, seven big banks are moving around 1.2 trillion euros of assets from Britain to the eurozone as part of their preparations for Brexit.

EPP suspends Fidesz party membership: The European People’s Party (EPP) on Wednesday suspended Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party over alleged violations of EU rule-of-law principles. The suspension entails no attendance at any EPP party meeting, no voting rights, and no right to propose candidates for posts. Fidesz will have to meet various conditions and a three-man panel will judge whether the party is acting in accordance with the EPP’s rules and values. Although the suspension stops short of complete expulsion, the decision comes as a blow for Orban on the eve of an EU summit. The move also deprives the EPP of one of its strongest-performing parties — albeit one from a small EU member country — just two months before the European Parliament election.
